A shining light in the gloom

I have always believed that Kenny Jackett’s future would be determined by how Pompey were doing at the end of October, particularly after the poor start to the season and if he were to be fired, to give the new manager a chance to prepare for the winter transfer window.

I believe our recent performances have demonstrated that the manager’s job is as safe as it can be for the foreseeable future.

Like him or not, Jenny Jackett is, statistically, Pompey’s most successful manager in modern times with a win rate of more than 50%.

Marquis

I believe that the biggest factor in our recent improvement is getting Marquis playing regularly and finally delivering the sorts of performances that were expected but which failed to happen last season.

Winning away at Sunderland was no mean feat.

It was good to see Harness continuing to do well and Curtis getting a goal against Northampton.

The current tactics seem to suit the squad we have.

I’m glad things are going well for Jack Whatmough and only hope that his knee holds up.

Unfortunately, I thought the departure of Evans was inevitable as he was being used less and less and Pompey have now got decent cover at left back which had been his fall-back role. He could be relied upon to give his all and I’m sure all Pompey fans are grateful for his efforts and will wish him well at Bradford.

Mer optimistisk nå

I am much more optimistic about this season that I was at the start and Pompey are clearly as good as anybody else in the League, hopefully they can end in a higher position than last season.

The owners still seem to be investing in the ground and the long term strategy is to be admired even though I’m sure we would all like a couple of “big” signings. We should be very grateful of their financial support given the dire circumstances of many other clubs for whom survival is their main focus. Pompey at least are in a position to get something out of this season even though I doubt fans will get to see much if any of it live.

Maybe this is the season to excel at effective, unattractive, football as we are not there to witness it.

We all want to win but I certainly preferred watching Paul Cook’s style of play and his statistics were not so bad.

The FA Cup match against Ipswich is a bit of a distraction and the teams are evenly matched at the moment – nobody wants to go out in the first round but the league is far more important and must be a priority – little extra revenue can be expected without paying fans.

Pompey have got the talent and leadership to succeed so lets all hope it continues are we are still at or very near the top after Easter by which time we might even be allowed back into watch matches.
