2018-19: Portsmouth – Charlton 1-2

Skudstats sagde 18-8 i Pompeys favør.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer:

“To come here again and get another result is fantastic and I’m just over the moon for everybody,” Bowyer told the club website.

“Our crowd didn’t stop singing the whole game.”

“We picked up another couple of injuries tonight and that’s what’s hurting us at the moment,”

“It’s important to be in amongst it. You have to be around it at this stage of the season and you can’t let anyone get too far ahead. Portsmouth had won eight on the spin before tonight and you can see why they have.

“We’re in amongst it and this was our game in hand. We’re fifth now and we’re nearly halfway through so there’s a long way to go and a lot of points to play for, so we’ll get even better as the season goes on.”

“It was a real man’s performance and a real team performance.

“They were passionate and had togetherness and I think we deserved the three points.

“We kept the ball well and in the second half we had to dig deep.

“We have players that can play and who can all stick together and fight as one.”

Pompey manager Kenny Jackett:

“I thought Charlton were the better team in the first half and we just couldn’t get to grips to them – they had Championship quality on the break.

“We had a good second period and were perhaps unlucky by the end not to have got something out of the game.

“It was the reversal of many of our matches this season, where we’ve dominated early and defended after the break.

“We felt that things needed to change in the second half, although there was certainly no lack of effort or application.

“I felt we could get one goal and then have a real go at Charlton, but there were just some things that didn’t go our way.

“Our opponents put their bodies on the line and just rode out those periods when we put a lot of pressure on them.

“We got the crowd going after the break and they were right behind us, but we don’t want to be in situations where we have to come back.

“I don’t believe in luck – you make your own. We have to analyse what happened at the start and try not to repeat that.”
