2015-16: Portsmouth – Bournemouth 1-2 (FA Cup 4.runde)

Så fra at Pompeyfans sang are you Bournemouth in disguise da AC Milan gæstede Fratton Park, ja så kunne fansene med lidt god vilje have sunget, are you Milan in disguise.

Gammel Pompeyspiller gjorde forskellen

Kommentarer fra The News:

Portsmouth impressed me and they didn’t look League Two but not sure how much it was us being crap or them making it hard for us…..all in all job done and happy to be in the last 16.

It was a good performance but we were never going to be able to keep the pressure on for 90 mins. Howe’s timing of the subs was spot on just as we were beginning to tire. It’s been a good run and some valuable added revenue. Now lets see what we can do about our league position.

I am praying that before tomorrow evening we get in the out-and-out target man forward that’s missing, whether that be Lavery or A N OTHER, without someone to relieve the pressure and give the «in behind me» 3 a chance to get upfield then we will be in trouble, Cookie forget waiting for the emergency window to open the following week as we have ALL winnable games in February, these will result in us catching up with the current top 3′
Yesterday shows how far we’ve come this year… Matching a premier league team…

Two points that need addressing to help our push for promotion… This automatic promotion is definitely achievable… The lads know it can be done and so can we…

A centre forward is clearly needed… McNulty will be more effective with some help… Roberts is not a forward… We must also cut out these needless free-kicks in the final third… They have cost us countless points…
Far from being despondent or reaching for a sharp instruments, maybe we should reflect a little and take in what has already been achieved this season.

In cup competitions we’ve played 5 games against teams two or more divisions above ours and have a record of won 2, drawn 1, and lost 2… all of these games have been decided by a single goal.

In the league we are in the frame for promotion and have conceded the lowest amount of goals in our division. At the same time we are fourth overall in the goals scored column.

I’d say that all Cook and his team have got an awful lot right so far. We WILL be in Division One next season…
Two successive home defeats in front of bumper crowds. In one were outplayed by a team which then lost at home 3 0 yesterday and in the second we played very well, but didn’t turn advantages and possession into goals. Three rows away from me in the South Stand a forlorn and isolated Tubbs watched the matches motionless. I think this may well be our legacy this season. An opportunity missed.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe:

«It’s always a risk, you don’t know what the outcome’s going to be»

«But I believe that the players, when you look at them individually, are all very good players.

«They’ve all done it at a very good level, so I had no hesitation in making the changes. We absolutely trust all our players and need to give them chances.

And we need them to be fit, this was a great opportunity to get them games so they are still ready to go in the Premier League. It was a very tough game, we expected it, we knew it was going to come.

«Credit to Portsmouth they were very good, they passed the ball, they pressed us. We didn’t get into any rhythm, and it took us really to get the two subs on to get control of the game. But once we did we were very good until the end of the game.»

«We want to go as far as we can and who knows how far it can take you. These rounds are difficult but if you can get beyond them you never know how it can transform your season.

«We were concerned at half-time. We wanted a better performance in the second half. We picked a team to win this game, but the key thing is the players had the character to respond and get us into the next round.

«We had to dig in, but we came through that. When you have a bench like that you know you’ve got the ability to change the game and thankfully that’s what happened.»

Pompey manager Paul Cook:

«I just shut my eyes» when Bournemouth sent on the cavalry but accepted defeat without issue, only hoping that his side had enhanced their reputation.

«We wanted to make sure that by the end of the day people spoke well about us,» said Cook. «The reality was it was a good game, we came off second-best and we wish Bournemouth well in the next round.

«Bournemouth are a quality team, they had strength on the bench and that told. The stadium was rocking, it was disappointing not to win and for that we apologise, but I think the supporters still went home with smiles on their faces.»
