3. januar 1988 er en merkedag for Pompey-fans. Det var lenge den ene Southamp***-seieren de forholdsvis unge Pompey-supporterne husket.

3. januar 1988.

Southampton 0-2 Portsmouth January 3, 1988

By Jordon Cross

It was the day the balance of power on the south coast swung back in Pompey’s favour for the first time in 24 years.

After 10 attempts spanning that period, Alan Ball’s side ensured the bragging rights swung back this way along the M27 with a wonderful 2-0 win at The Dell with goals from Barry Horne and Terry Connor.

A proud club had been on the decline for years as they fell all the way to football’s basement, before starting their steady return up their leagues.

That day marked the completion of Pompey’s ascent as they indisputably became top dogs once again.

It was the following day it really sunk in that was the case, though.

The date 03/01/88 may be etched in the club’s history, but 04/01/88 had almost as significant an impact on me.

The back page of The News delivered one of the most glorious stories I have ever read, as the city bathed in the afterglow of victory.

SOUTH COAST KINGS the headline boomed, as it pictured Terry Connor wheeling away in delight after scoring the second goal.

There it was in print. Pompey’s coronation had been confirmed. An indisputable, glorious fact. Unfortunately it was typical Pompey , when they sold our captain Mick Kennedy just days later to Bradford.

That was one of my first south coast derby memories, the only previous one being that raucous showdown at Fratton Park earlier in the campaign which ended in an exciting 2-2 draw, with a Colin Clarke brace for Saints and goals from Vince Hilaire and Clive Whitehead.

That provided a textbook education into the sheer ferocity and extreme feeling that exists between the two clubs and their sets of fans.

The crown Pompey collected that day early in 1988 remained in their ownership for eight years, until it slipped in the wake of the 3-0 FA Cup defeat at The Dell.
