«I’m absolutely delighted to be here. This is a massive club and I can’t wait to get started. I heard there was a bit of interest the previous week and when I had a chat with the gaffer it all sounded really good. He didn’t really have to sell Pompey to me because I’d spoken with a lot of lads here and they only had nice things to say.
We just looked at the way the team play and what he wanted to see from me, while this gives me a chance to compete at a high level and show my quality. The fans are amazing at Sunderland and they’re mad about football, but I want to play football and so this is a beautiful opportunity for me.
I’ve got mates who have played at Fratton Park and I’ve heard a lot about the place. I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans and winning games. The goal now is to stay in the Championship and I’ll do whatever I can to help us achieve that. We need to work hard and all pull in the same direction.
I’d describe myself as an aggressive, fast and calm centre-back – although I can also play on the left – and I like to lead by example.
I experienced promotion when I was on loan at Cambridge, but that was during Covid and we went up automatically. So being able to go to Wembley last season and see the fans flood London, then lift the trophy – it was an amazing experience.”
