2019-20: Portsmouth – Lincoln 1-0

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett:

“The players worked ever so hard and really grafted for each other to earn the clean sheet.

“I think Lincoln’s one proper chance was from a corner when the ball pinged around and popped into Craig’s arms.

“But we looked dangerous from our own set-pieces and were able to score from one of them, with John in the right place.

«The work ethic of all the players was fantastic. That’s a really big thing and we dug in when it was needed.»

“He put in a great – and industrious – performance and it’s a great feeling for a centre-forward to get the winner.

“We have some defensive stability now. It’s a goal a game conceded in the league, which is somewhere near where we want to be.

“Now we want to build on that and go forward with those three guys just behind the striker and those full-backs coming out at the right time.

“I thought we cut Wimbledon open more on Saturday in terms of opportunities, while this was a different game.

“But the work ethic of all the players was fantastic. That’s a really big thing and we dug in when it was needed.”

Lincoln manager Michael Appleton:

‘We’ve been done on a set-play which is very disappointing and I’ve made my feelings clear about that.

‘We knew it was coming. They’ve got some big, big players and we haven’t.

‘I was more disappointed that it was a free header, rather than him winning the header.

‘When the likes of Burgess and Sean Raggett go in there, we might not be favourites to win the header but we want to make it as difficult as we can to get good contact.’

#Pompey 1 Lincoln 0 HT. Blues relatively comfortable and leading through Marquis’ tap in. Largely proving to be an open game. Williams is everywhere, but needs that final product. Naylor really has bit between teeth. McCrorie’s been okay at RB so far, but a few shaky moments.

Think of the players with had last year , Lowe , Clarke , Thompson and Ben Thompson

no wonder we’re so much weaker when we don’t replace them players #pompey

So despite seeing my team win 1-0 I was so, so bored throughout. Think the one time (apart from the goal) I was out of my seat was when Curtis came on and we had about a min or two where we attacked down the left and won a corner… That’s it. #jackettout #pompey #pfc

Good football at times with options to play to. Felt fans annoyed at times with lack of options not short passing. Spells of good defending, too many individual mistakes defending. Confidence builder in team massively lacking cinfidence. Team showed more energy #pompey

Reflecting on last night. Opening 10mins thought we were very good and overall 1st half we looked alright. I wonder what KJ said at HT tho because 2nd half we looked less motivated and very average! I’m a Close fan but been poor recently. Defence still a worry tho! #Pompey

True, 3 points is 3 points. However… The truth is: 1. we’re crap 2. we’re not improving 3. owners don’t care. Send McCrorie back now. In January sell Marquis, Curtis, Raggett, Cannon, Downing. Need a Doyle/Merson figure in midfield.

Great battling performance to beat good Lincoln team. So pleased not to hear chants against our manager from low life «supporters». Some have forgotten where we were 6 years ago. Let’s climb that table. #pompey #pup #kennyisourking

Observations from tonight’s #Pompey match: 1. Crowd flat 2. Players tried 3. Set up wrong 3. Cannon ahead of Close plz 4. Leave Williams up top when defending corners. 5. Replace Marquis when he’s fooked 6. Harness ready to be No.10 7. McCrorie wasted at RB 8. #JackettOut

Poor performance but a win is a win! Need to freshen up centre midfield, Close & Naylor simply can’t help Marquis & Evans with a high pass that they did time & time again, so many times Lincoln just popped it round them & at our defence before we knew it. Cannon for Close #Pompey
