2017-18: Rochdale – Portsmouth 3-3

Rochdale Keith Hill:

‘I thought we played superb offensive football. ‘We took the game to the opponent and I think Portsmouth rode their luck. They’re an excellent side, they didn’t go away, and they got the equaliser. ‘The key component of Portsmouth is Brett Pitman, who was involved in all three goals at some point. I said to my central defenders that it’s typical of them having a good game today but their striker (Pitman), who is the main threat scores two goals and is involved in the final equaliser as we go into the embers of the game. ‘We should have done better in those situations with the long balls forward, but I’m really pleased with the energy, the commitment, the way the players played, and arguably, it could be a good point. ‘Portsmouth are a good side and beat Wigan earlier in the week, and they’re on a really good run, having won four before Saturday and conceding just one.

‘They’ve conceded three because of the way we attacked, and it’s a shame we couldn’t get the balance to the way that we defended.’

Pompey manager Kenny Jackett:

‘They were a yard quicker than us for the majority of the game. ‘We did well to hang on to their coat-tails and come back three times. ‘They had a lot of flow and good delivery in vital areas. ‘We’ve done well to earn a point though and, after being behind three times, we’ve shown character which I’m pleased about.’

Brett, Brett, Brett! He’ll smash it in the net! He scores left right and centre, our Captain-Magic Brett!

Really poor defending from #Pompey for all three goals yesterday. Simple closing down would have won us the game. Got away with it – need to step it back up next week.

Summary of yesterday 1/ we played poor when level 2/ we played well when behind 3/ showed fantastic character we haven’t had at times this season (a month ago we would have lost that 3-0) #Pompey

@JamzLowe is having a great season at @officialpompey but could he do it on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke? Of course he can and it could be next season. #Pompey #PFC

Great support, great team spirit, 22 goals for Pitman. Disappointing to concede 3 but hey @officiallydale are improving and on that showing will certainly stay up. Never say die attitude just what we need for the run in. Good to see O’Keefe back. #Pompey

4/ Lowe /Pitman link for our first was outstanding, as was Pitmans run into the area (need to focus on that partnership next season and keep both fit and in form, we could win the league) 5/ Ive seen enough from @officiallydale over 2 games to believe they should stay up
