2015/16 Portsmouth – Derby 2-1 (1.runde League Cup)

Young guns i forsvaret.

Kommentarer fra The News:

What a result,,were Derby actually there last night.???? We were awesome, I said it in the comments on Saturday there is definitely a new dawn at Fratton Park, even with the changes PC made to the team the players were all playing for each other, Stockley was outstanding, Webster was too, in fact with the work rate that the whole team put in they should ALL get the man of the match award. Fratton Park was absolutely rocking last night and long may it continue…

Well played Pompey absolutely superb from start to finish back to front but how good was Jayden Stockley? Quality was with Derby fans who were really impressed! Play Up Pompey!

Love the interview on sky with merse and cook. You can see through the guarded replies from cook he believes he’s got that special connection with Pompey. Merse was loving it, you can see how close to us he really is. Fantastic night and let’s not forget the fans, the atmosphere was incredible, the park was rocking again!! We’re back that’s for sure. A win sat will really get us all believing but as cookie says it’s a very long hard season but time to enjoy it

What were you all saying when we couldn’t beat Bognor or Havant and Waterlooville in pre-season? Where are you now?

Thought so…

PUP

Hats off to the club for the ticket prices last night… It made it more accessible to the youngsters… Plenty of them there last night…

Great game to be at last night, following on from Saturday. IMO, all we need now is another RB as cover for Ben Davies, as I am worried that his work rate and commitment is going to burn him out or an injury is going to occur, leaving us very short. I was quite impressed with Dutch Lad who played for half the game against Coventry. Is he still available? Would make adequate I feel, then we would have enough all round, as I don’t think we need another striker at this moment in time. PUP, PPU.

We were brilliant all over the pitch again last. So good to have strength in depth. Seems that we have a really strong dressing room, we chased every ball, won every 50/50, pressed hard, hunted down Derby and every player wanted to put his body on the line for the team. 4 or 5 players could have got MOTM last night, but for me, Matt Clarke was impeccable. What a difference it makes having a natural left footed CB in there. Really can’t pick my best starting XI for Saturday now. Think it will be a tough game vs Plymouth. They seem to hate us and are always desperate to turn us over so will be right up for it. Be happy with a point.

Had to laugh seeing him interviewed alongside Stockley on Sky – Conor barely came up to his shoulder! Sorry Tubbsie but this lad has to start on Saturday.

Derby Manager Paul Clement:

«We never got going right from the first minute,» the Derby Telegraph quotes the ex-Real Madrid chief as saying. «We deserved to lose tonight, basically, on the performance over the 90 minutes.

«I think we were sleeping in the first half. We expected intensity from them. We expected the crowd to really get behind the team, so that wasn’t a surprise, but we just didn’t cope with it very well.

«I don’t think we showed courage in our football until we went behind. We ended up playing some good football really but it was all to late, all to reactive.»

Pompey assistant manager Leam Richardsson

‘I thought it was a good performance and very pleasing when you are playing against Derby County, who are full of quality throughout the club.

‘Once you breed fear it goes through the club so it’s important, especially for some lads that came on to the pitch, to go out there with positivity.

‘We certainly had nothing to lose so the message was “go and enjoy the game” and the one thing that can be a given is you can work as hard as you possibly can. I think individually and collectively we did that.

‘We were up against some good players in a structure the manager put forward over the last couple of days and he told the players they would certainly enjoy it off the back of that.

‘The more touches you get, the more positive touches you get, even the more positive mistakes you make – you enjoy a game like that.

‘I thought the lads deserve full credit in what they do and it was a fully-deserved victory. Without disrespecting Derby County, our lads – with the work ethic and application they put forward – deserved a positive result.’

‘I thought it was fantastic.

‘I did recognise the loudest they became was when Derby scored, which was puzzling initially but people keep telling me these Portsmouth fans are unique! I can’t compliment them enough so far in my time here.

‘They took the roof off when we scored and saw the lads home.

‘Derby brought on international players worth millions of pounds and started dictating a little bit of possession but we came through.’
