Doyle returnerer til Fratton Park

For halvannet år siden forlot Michael Doyle jobben som akademitrener i Pompey og ble manager i Woking. Nå returnerer den tidligere Pompey-kapteinen til Fratton Park.

NYHETER: Michael Doyle var kaptein da Pompey vant League Two under Paul Cook som manager. Det var derfor populært da han returnerte til Pompey for å bl akademitrener.

Jeg møtte selv Doyle til en uformell prat på en pub i Portsmouth på denne tiden og han fortalte da at han ukependlet mellom Portsmouth (hvor han bodde på hotell) og sitt hjem i Midt-England. Det var derfor ikke overraskende da han valgte å si opp da han fikk en managerjobb nærmere familien. Han ble da manager i Woking.

Men etter et drøyt år som manager for Woking fikk han sparken. Han har gått uten jobb siden desember og nå har Pompey ansatt Doyle som trener for førstelaget. Han blir altså en del av trenerteamet til John Mousinho og er klar for sin tredje periode i Pompey. Doyle kommer til å få et spesielt ansvar for dødballer.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be back at Pompey. It’s a great opportunity for me to work with the gaffer and the rest of the staff. The club has stepped up a division since I left and I hope that I can help as much as possible because I know there’s nowhere better to be.

I spoke with John and Rich over the summer and know what’s expected. I want to improve and become a better coach – I believe this is the best place to do just that. The way this group finished last season was excellent – they were on the front foot and pressing with aggression.

The side are going from strength to strength under John and hopefully I can play a small part in continuing that upward trajectory.»

«I’m delighted that Michael has joined the staff. As well as being first team coach, he will also have a focus on set-pieces. He’s got a fantastic pedigree as a player – especially here at Pompey, where everyone will be well aware of his exploits.

He lifted a league trophy and has previously been here as part of the academy set-up, while he has a lot of other coaching experience. I played against Michael on quite a few occasions and he was certainly a tough competitor, so he’s an excellent character to have around the place. He can have a big impact here.”
