Tilbake og klar for en skjebnesesong

Paddy Lane hadde en fantastisk sesong da Pompey rykket opp til Championship. Forrige sesong ble tung for kantspilleren. Med ett år igjen av kontrakten må 24-åringen levere nå.

NYHETER: Paddy Lane scoret hele tolv mål og hadde åtte assists fra sin kantrolle da Pompey vant League One i 2023/24. Han var en av kandidatene til å bli årets spiller i Pompey og det også rykter om at klubber på høyere nivå var interesserte.

Det ble tøffere for Lane i Championship i 2024/25. Han fikk 14 kamper fra start og ti som innbytter, men overbeviste ikke. Rundt jul/nyttår viste Lane framgang og han scoret også sitt første mål på Championship-nivå da Pompey banket Swansea 4-0 på Fratton Park 1. januar.

Han fikk deretter to kamper til fra start like etterpå, men ble byttet ut i pausen mot Blackburn. På grunn av kneskade kom han aldri på banen igjen den sesongen.

Nå har 24 år gamle Paddy Lane kun ett år igjen av sin kontrakt og han må vise at han klarer overgangen til Championship om det skal bli ny kontrakt på ham. Holder han Championship-nivå, eller må han ned til League One igjen for å finne seg en ny klubb?

Hovedtrener John Mousinhos kommentarer om Lane før treningen startet opp igjen

«Paddy’s big challenge first of all is to come back fit and prove himself in terms of fitness. He then needs to take himself to the next level in terms of sharpness and Championship athleticism. So he needs to come back firing, be at it and prove himself to be a Championship winger.

He played enough games last year, he played a few games and was just starting to get into his stride before he got injured. ‘It’s another big year for him. I haven’t said to Paddy he’s going to be more peripheral, I’ve said to him by the time he returns he has the opportunity to have an impact and he needs to have a massive impact.

That’s coming back, being fit and being fresh and actually saying where he was this time last year – he needs to be better than that. Absolutely. He’s coming up against a different level of Championship full-back – better defenders, better athletes and better all-round defenders.

So when I talk about Paddy coming back and making an impact I don’t just mean athletically, though there’s work to do there, it’s making sure football-wise he’s up to the level as well. He managed to get off the mark at home against Swansea with just the one goal, so Paddy will want to have more of a contribution than that.

He managed to get himself going towards the back end and there was times when he was left out, which he was frustrated with. I just think this now is a good opportunity and good challenge for him.»
