2024-25: Hull City – Portsmouth 1-1

Eftertanken

Sunderland beholdt 1. pladsen i rækken trods 0-0 hos QPR.

“We wanted to stay in the game during the first half and make life difficult for Hull – and we did for the most part. The goal we conceded was frustrating and we’ll look at that in more detail, but Nico only had to make one serious save. We just needed to be slightly more aggressive because we’d been too passive and gave the ball away cheaply. We then got a couple of bits of detail right straight from the kick-off in the second half and scored from that. From that point on it was pretty much one-way traffic and we should have won the game, but the performance level was brilliant. I thought the way we played in the second half was the best 45 minutes that I’ve seen from us this season. Now we need to react on Tuesday like we’d lost the game – and to be honest, it felt that way at the final whistle – and really get at Plymouth.”

“We needed more help from the officials and I said to the fourth that I’d get sent off if I said what I wanted to say. Callum is clipped from behind in the first half and then Kusini is pulled down in the box in the second. That’s given 100 per cent of the time if it happens outside the area – and probably 99 per cent of the time inside. We’ve then got a 3v1 when Ritchie is fouled and it’s a red card – I really can’t get my head around it to be honest.”

Et par ord fra Josh Murphy

“It’s a really good point for us, but it probably should have been all three in the end. The performances in each half were like chalk and cheese, and after the break we really came at Hull. We stopped messing around and it was a magnificent bit of play from Langy to get the ball in the box. You always have to anticipate them missing the ball and as it fell for me, I knew it was the perfect time for me to score. I obviously would have liked to get my first goal sooner, but am delighted to get off the mark for Pompey. Seeing the fans celebrating is what it’s all about and so I want to savour those moments and recreate them. hat goal really set the tone for us and we had the bit between our teeth – we were unlucky not to go on and win. The manager told us just to believe in ourselves and that second half display is what we’re all about. They couldn’t live with us. Both penalties should have been given, although at the same time, we can’t be relying on those decisions to win games.”
