Tom Naylor sendte oss ut av FA-cupen.
Chesterfield er serieleder i National League og altså det beste lagen utenfor ligasystemet. Pompey er serieleder i League One og det beste laget som er med i FA-cupens 1. runde. I søndagens oppgjør var Chesterfield best og vant fortjent.
Ekstra surt var det at både Regan Poole og Tino Anjorin måtte av banen med skader. Den brede Pompey-stallen begynner nå å bli preget av mange skader, og selv om det er surt å ryke ut av FA-cupen så tidlig kan det være greit med tanke på våre muligheter for direkte opprykk. Og det er utvilsomt det viktigste av alt denne sesongen.

«It’s difficult to pinpoint one or two moments because there were a lot of things that went wrong for us. Ultimately, our performance levels just weren’t there and we got beaten by a very good Chesterfield side.
There were plenty of things we did well up until half-time, but they were all over us after the break and thoroughly deserved the win. Our quality was really poor and we got into some good spots, only for the ball to keep going out for goal-kicks.
We didn’t get too many shots off to test their goalkeeper and it was a frustration. We also got out-worked and it felt like they were running all over us at times. It can be difficult with the emotion after the game and you don’t want to overreact – which we won’t do – and sometimes it’s just best to take a breath. It’s a bit of a cliché, but these things happen in the FA Cup and the most important thing for us is the league campaign. That’s probably the first time we’ve taken our foot off the gas for prolonged periods and we got what we deserved.”

«It’s obviously frustrating and experiencing a defeat isn’t something that we’re used to this season. That’s a habit we don’t want to get into and we’re disappointed to go out of the FA Cup, but it’s important for us not to overreact. We want to be a team that dominates games and ultimately, our quality just wasn’t there on this occasion.
All of us were below our standards and that hasn’t been the norm for us – we’ve been able to churn out performances every week. It shows the strength of the pyramid that we’ve come to a National League team and got punished for not being at the top of our game.
I don’t think our performance deserved anything more, although if we’re where we currently are in May, then nobody cares about this one. So we have to all stick together – which we will – and put this result behind us. We’re looking forward to Tuesday, but then I think you’ll see a much better version of us against Charlton.”
Pompey also had to contend with Regan Poole and Tino Anjorin both going off injured during the first half.
Morrell said: “That’s as disappointing as the result for us because they’ve been key players for us so far this season. Regan’s been immense and Tino’s just finding his feet, but you can see the quality that he’s got. It seemed like a day when nothing was going for us.”
