2019-20: Tranmere – Portsmouth 0-2

Despite being up 0-2 I must say we are inferior in terms of performance today. Especially not impressed with how we manage being in the lead as it seems we’re interested enough in pursuing another goal. Either way, happy for the 3 points

Nothing better on a Saturday getting another 3 points away

Early on in the season I thought we wouldn’t have a chance of the automatics but with two/three games in hand on those above it’s time to roll out the #believe tag again #Pompey@ExpressFM

all to play for going into the home straight

have you seen the beach we are playing at?

#Pompey have won 21 of their last 29 games in all competitions. Just 3 losses and 5 draws in between. It’s not been pretty at times but you simply cannot be anything else but chuffed with that

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett:

«The record’s fantastic and we’re delighted – the players should be very proud and it means we’ve got a lot to play for in three competitions.

“We need to recover well, avoid injuries, keep our rhythm and rise to the challenge in the last third of the season.

“It was always going to be a tough game at Tranmere, so I was really happy with the outcome and we had to be at our best defensively.«The record’s fantastic and we’re delighted – the players should be very proud.»

“Cook and Vaughan were a real handful up front and they made it difficult to get out, along with the slight slope and a bit of wind.

“But then we took advantage of that from the start of the second half and got a very good goal from Ryan Williams.

“It’s something we’ve been talking about because he gives us so much and we want him to add goals to his game.

“I’m also pleased for Sean because he’s stuck at it and shown good character – as a number of players have during the course of the season.

“He’s benefitted from a strong partnership with Christian Burgess and the pair of them have grown as the games have gone on.

“The goals were the most pleasing aspect and we had good chances to score even more, which is encouraging.”

Tranmere manager Micky Mellon

“We defended poorly again, we don’t give ourselves a chance if we give away goals like that. There were a lot of lads who gave good performances but to lose goals like that that when we did at the stages of the game that it was in would be tough for anybody.

“They are incredibly soft goals and it is not something that we have suddenly started to do, it has been all season.

“We do everything that we can, we work hard on it and maybe we we’re working too hard and putting too much of a focus on it, but we are working hard on it.

“I think we always have to be honest and say I thought we were the better side in the first-half, I thought we were the more likely to score and to get undone like that is ridiculous.”
