2025-26: Coventry – Portsmouth 5-1

We are staying up.

Normalt når man får en snitte på 5-1, er man som fans lidt øv, men da resultaterne gik Pompeys vej igår, ja så kunne fansene synge we are staying up og bidrage til hjemmeholdets oprykningsfest.

Gassen var gået noget af ballonen efter seneste tre kampe som har krævet meget energi af spillerne ikke mindst mentalt, og flere af Coventrys mål kom på en billig baggrund, men who cares, we are staying up.

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho

It feels really strange because it was such a brutal 45 minutes after the break, but we were also aware of the score at Oxford.

“My words to the boys afterwards were that we earned the right to get away with a result like that – which we hadn’t when we lost to QPR.

“We’ve left absolutely everything on the pitch during the past few matches and this just felt like one game too far for us.

“But I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve stayed up, even if it is a weird set of circumstances. If you’d offered me this at any stage from October onwards, I would have snapped your hands off.

“If you look at the context of our season, to get to 51 points and secure our Championship status with two games remaining, it’s a monumental achievement.

“We’ve taken 11 from five fixtures since the international break and so it’s been an exceptional few weeks for us.

“There was relief when the result was confirmed at Oxford and, on reflection, we’ll be very pleased with the achievement.

“The mood was a bit low afterwards, but it’s a good sign that the boys aren’t happy. We’ve shown that we can compete with the top sides in the league, although not if you come off it just five per cent.”
