2025-26- Middlesbrough – Portsmouth 0-1

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho

To score in those circumstances with pretty much the last kick of the game – with so much pressure on us in the second half – is definitely right up there.

“It was the polar opposite of a lot of our games over the past few months, when we’ve dominated and come away scratching our heads.

“We’ve been on the receiving end of that ‘smash and grab’, but we did what we had to in order to remain in the contest.

“As it progressed, we knew there would be more pressure on Middlesbrough to get forward and there were opportunities for us to break when we didn’t have that quality or belief.

“The one time we did that properly, we won a corner and we’ve scored from that to secure all three points.

“We threw our bodies in front of the ball and considering it was Jojo’s third start in English football, he was excellent.

“The defending from Regan was what we’ve come to expect, Terry was ill before the game and got through 90, while Jordan Williams hasn’t had as many minutes of late.

“So the back four in particular were superb and Nico made some great saves, although it was full team effort that meant we kept a clean sheet.

“The contribution from Chappers was brilliant – his work-rate was relentless and he was a real leader as well. We’ve been asking for more goals from him and we’re delighted he got one at the end.

“We’ve given ourselves half a chance now with five games remaining and have to keep picking up as many points as we can.”

Han var ikke tilfreds må man sige

“It’s difficult to put into words, but it was definitely ‘snatch and grab’. We showed togetherness in abundance.

“Segs showed good technique with a dropping ball and nobody wanted to slash at it, so it came through and I got the touch. I didn’t know too much about it and was looking at the lino for what felt an age.

“I’m really proud of the boys for showing a lot of the qualities that are needed to get us to where we need to be.

“There was a lot of grit, spirit and commitment – and then you have to believe that a chance is going to come at some point.

“I think we only had around three shots, but we had a corner late on and thankfully we got the goal that sends the fans home happy.

“Middlesbrough dominated possession and had a lot of chances – as they do in most games – so we have to enjoy that aspect of digging in and landing on second balls.

“We needed a bit of luck and Nico made a few really good saves at a time when they had a lot of momentum, while Doz has cleared one off the line.

“But we worked so hard and got our just rewards for that. We’d grafted all game for one moment and thankfully it’s gone in off my knee.

“The fans have spent their money and had six or seven hours travelling up in the car, so having something to celebrate will send them home a lot happier.”
