2025-2026: Portsmouth – West Bromwich Albion 3-0

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho

“It was the best performance of the season from us so far and a really important result.

“I was really impressed with what we did in the first half, although the second then obviously becomes a bit of a different game.

“It was a professional showing from when we scored the third goal onwards, but overall the lads put everything together.

“We pinned West Brom in from the very first minute, won the physical duels and were willing to play, coming out on top in the key moments.

“The energy was there from us – and so was the quality. Putting those two together is what we’ve struggled with at times, so I was really pleased.

“We got into the final third on a number of occasions and were absolutely relentless with the chances we created.

“Another important part of the game was just that we looked so comfortable and not ever likely to concede.”

Portsmouth player Conor Chaplin

“We made a really good start to the game – playing on the front foot and with a lot of intensity. That’s exactly what we wanted.

“Then the first goal came through something that Milli and I have been talking about a lot. He’s unpredictable and can go inside or outside.

“But you also know where he’s going to put the ball in the box and thankfully it’s one that’s come off for us on this occasion.

“It’s obviously been long overdue and there was an outpouring of emotion because it’s something I’ve been waiting for.

“This has been one of the most difficult parts of my career in terms of not scoring, but I’ve tried to keep doing the right things every single day because there’s no secret recipe.

“It’s about the repetition and it’s worth it for moments like that. Long may it continue and fingers crossed, I can get a few more.

WBA manager Eric Ramsey

It was a really poor performance and insists the whole group will have to «look themselves in the face» and make big improvements going forward.

«That was a really disappointing performance from beginning to end. It’s one we have to own, take accountability for and really stare ourselves in the face as a group of individuals who are desperate to get better.

«There’s certainly no lack of will or lack of desire to improve the team’s situation, but what we saw today wasn’t reflective of where we need to be in any way.

«We had real intent to make sure we didn’t feed the crowd in the opening stages, and we knew how it would feel here. It’s a heavy atmosphere; their connection with their crowd at this point is good, they’re in a really good rhythm. It’s obviously a tough place to come and play.

«We wanted to make sure that we didn’t add to their momentum, that we took it away, we dampened it, but that wasn’t the case in the opening stages, of course. We fed it through not being competitive enough in the fundamental things in the middle of the pitch, not just the midfield players but the team as a whole.

«Obviously we lacked real quality on the ball when moments arose to take the sting out of the game and show some composure, so on a couple of levels it was really disappointing.
